Chrysler Group LLC. looks to become the first American automobile manufacturer to offer an 8-speed transmission. This is the type of transmission that is available in the high-end rides of Bentley, BMW, and Rolls Royce.
Initially the eight-speed will only be offered in select Chrysler 300 and Dodge Chargers and will be paired with the 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar engine. The first models will be the 2012 Chrylser 300, 300S (V6) and 300 Limited and the 2012 Dodge Charger SE, SXT, and R/T as well as the high-performance SRT8.
Chrylser Group says there are a number of “cost saving, energy-efficient, earth-friendly and comfy benefits” that come with using the eight-speed transmission:
- Increase of 4 mpg
- Transmission efficiency and wide ratio spread to increase city fuel economy
- 11% decrease in emissions
- “Nearly imperceptible gear changes” due to evenly spaced gear ratios
- Lower viscosity transmission fluid can be used
