The annual Overton County Relay for Life race will take place in nearby Livingston on Saturday, August 8, starting at 5 PM and lasting until 12 AM. The race will take place at Livingston Academy High School.
Relay for Life is a national event that celebrates survivors of cancer and raises money to donate to cancer research and education. Relay for Life is a great opportunity for members of a community to come together and have fun, get exercise, and camp out with their neighbors. The event is actually less of a race and more of a walk, as there isn’t a race length requirement and participants are not trying to beat each other.
Here’s how the event works: since the walk is overnight, when you arrive at the relay you set up camp on the side of the track and sign in, and then you spend the next six hours trading off with your partners so that one of you is walking the track the entire time.
Relay for Life is one of the most important yearly events in any community, so we hope to see you there!
Tennis shoes, flip flops, heels, wedges, dress shoes, boat shoes, we have it all to choose from; but what if we didn’t, what if we not only didn’t have a choice of shoes, but instead we didn’t have any. That is the problem for over 300 million children worldwide, they do not have the priviledge of wearing shoes everyday. Didn’t think shoes were a priviledge? Imagine not being able to attend school or walk in certain places because you did not have anything on your feet. Imagine coming in contact with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases because you did not have a barrier between your feet and the harsh soil. These terrible conditions make us think, and luckily there is a group who wants to make a difference, and we can help!
Soles 4 Souls is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2006 and based in Nashville, Tennesse. The goal of Soles 4 Souls is to donate shoes and clothing to all those in need and help fight and prevent the devasting effects of poverty. Since their start eight years ago, the organization has donated over 20 million pairs of shoes to individuals in 127 different countries. Soles 4 Souls asks for the help of organizations and individuals all over the world to help with donations and the funding of operations.
Upper Cumberland and Putnam County have vowed to help with this cause and donate their used belongings. All Cumberland Auto Center stores are drop off locations for Soles 4 Souls and there are other locations around the city marked with large blue donation bins that will be accepting donations. By working together, we can help achieve something great as a city and help those who really need it. We are lucky enough to have luxuries in life so lets return the favor and give back and help improve the lives of others!
